Water restoration in Sioux City, Iowa

Most water calls here start in the basement: a line that froze in January, a floor drain that backed up in a June storm, or river and ground water pushing in from outside. The sooner it's out and dry, the less drywall and carpet you lose to mold.

Get help now
Before you do anything else. If a pipe broke, close the main water valve. If water is near outlets or the furnace, shut the power off at the panel, but only if you can reach it without standing in water. If the basement filled from outside flooding, do not pump it all out at once. Take photos, then send the form below.

How water usually gets into a Sioux City basement

A pipe froze and split

Sioux City averages about 51 days a year that never get above freezing, and about 16 nights at zero or below. Lines in outside walls, crawlspaces, and unheated garages split, and the water usually shows up at the thaw.

The floor drain backed up

Heavy rain and a high river load the sewer system. During the June 2024 flood, river water backed into manholes along the Bacon Creek channel. Anything that came up a floor drain is treated as contaminated water.

River, creek, or ground water came in

In June 2024 the Big Sioux crested near 45 feet at Riverside, more than 7 feet over the old record, and water came up through storm drains in the low streets. Flood water carries mud and sewage, so drywall and carpet it touched come out.

Pumping a flooded basement without cracking the walls

After the 2024 flood, FEMA and Siouxland emergency managers warned that draining a basement faster than the ground outside drains can crack or collapse the walls. Their steps:

  1. Start pumping only when flood water no longer covers the ground outside.
  2. Pump out about one foot, mark the level on the wall, and wait overnight.
  3. If the water came back over the mark, it is too early. Wait another day.
  4. Once it stops coming back, pump two to three feet a day until it is out.

None of this applies to a broken pipe. If the water came from inside the house, shut it off and get it out right away.

How the crew dries a basement

  1. Stop the source, or make sure the outside water has dropped.
  2. Extract the water and pull wet carpet and pad.
  3. Meter the walls and floor. Older foundations, like the ones under many century-old houses in Rose Hill and the North Side, can hold moisture in the masonry. Drywall gets cut where the meter says it is wet.
  4. Leave dehumidifiers and air movers running until the meter says dry.
  5. Take photos and log the moisture readings for your insurance company.

What changes the price

The kind of water (a clean supply line, a drain backup, or flood water), whether the basement is finished, how far it spread, and whether furniture and boxes have to be moved out first. An unfinished basement with a clean leak caught early is on the cheap side. A finished basement that took flood water is not. Rebuilding gets its own estimate. Get it in writing once the crew has metered the space.

Will insurance pay?

A sudden burst pipe is often covered by homeowners insurance. A floor drain or sewer backup often is only covered if the policy has a backup endorsement. Flood water from the Big Sioux, the Missouri, the Floyd, or Perry Creek usually needs a separate flood policy. For questions about how your policy works, the Iowa Insurance Division takes consumer calls at 877-955-1212.

The crew documents the damage and can meet your adjuster, but the claim itself is yours to handle.

Where the crew works

Sioux City, from Morningside and Leeds to the North Side, the West Side, Riverside, and Greenville. Also Sergeant Bluff, and across the river in South Sioux City and North Sioux City when the crew is licensed to work there.

Questions

How soon does a wet basement need attention?

The same day if you can. Wet drywall, carpet, and wood can start growing mold within 24 to 48 hours.

Should I pump out my flooded basement right away?

If a pipe broke, yes. If it flooded from outside, pump slowly once the ground outside is clear: about a foot, mark it, and wait overnight, as described above.

Does insurance cover a backed-up floor drain?

Often only with a water or sewer backup endorsement. Check your policy or ask your agent.

Who does the work?

An independent restoration company in the area. This site only takes the request.
